What is Kona Peaberry Coffee?
While Kona Coffee is revered amongst the world’s finest coffees, Peaberry is the highest grade of that coffee. Peaberry Beans are rare, constituting only 2-3% of the total coffee harvest. While Peaberry Beans are a rare delicacy, they are also distinct in their flavor profile.
Kona Coffee is well known for its smooth and balanced flavor with very low acidity. Peaberry takes that even further with sweet fruity notes, often described as nutty.
A typical coffee cherry contains two seeds, which sit facing each other. These seeds are what we commonly know as coffee beans. Flat on the inside and round on the outside. However, in the case of Peaberry Beans, a natural mutation occurs where only one of the seeds is fertilized. This single seed grows into a single rounded, pea-shaped bean, hence the name "Peaberry." Because it develops alone, a Peaberry bean tends to be denser and rounder than the usual flat-sided beans.
